What you need to know about addiction.

God cares about those struggling with addiction.

Typically, the topic of addiction isn’t openly discussed in a church. Although this is a tough topic, I believe that it is important, as a church, to be aware of addictions and how to treat those who struggle with it. Sometimes, we fall short and write off people who have an addiction because we think they will never change or it's too hard to help them.

Addiction is no respecter of person. Victims include both men and women, young and old, believers or unbelievers. Addiction isn’t just drugs or alcohol either. Addictions can include, gambling, porn, shopping, food, etc.

Did you know that addiction is considered a disease? Yes, just like diabetes or cancer. I know what you’re thinking, “People with addictions have a choice! It’s not the same.” Regarding addiction, some say that the first time is a choice and the times after are not. Addiction actually changes the chemical structure of the brain and its ability to function properly. That is what makes it so hard for the person struggling with addiction.

It is important to note that someone cannot change without the will to change. Sometimes it’s hard to draw that line too, especially when it’s someone we love. If you have a loved one struggling with addiction, here are a few things I want you to remember:

  1. You can’t change them or make them quit. As much as you want to, you can’t.

  2. You should not enable their behavior. Sometimes they have to reach the bottom on their own before they can get better. No, its not insensitive. You can still love and support them without enabling them.

  3. Talking about it isn't always bad. Find someone you trust that will listen. This is a way to take care of yourself, too.

Maybe you are reading this and you struggle with an addiction yourself. Please know that you are worthy of grace because Christ says so. If you don’t feel strong enough, reach out to someone. Whether it be a staff member at church, a family member, a friend. You are better off being honest about your situation than struggling alone. You CAN do this.
